What is Grok-2? Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has just launched Grok-2, the latest version of its AI assistant. This new model includes an image generation tool similar to OpenAI’s DALL-E and Google’s Gemini, but with fewer restrictions on what users can create.

Who can access it? Grok-2 is available to X users who subscribe to ‘Premium’ or ‘Premium+’. These users can now generate images and text responses with the AI, expanding the possibilities of creative expression.

What sets Grok-2 apart? Unlike its competitors, Grok-2 allows for the generation of images involving political figures and copyrighted brands—areas typically off-limits for other AI models. Users have already shared eye-catching examples, such as former President Donald Trump firing handguns and The Simpsons sporting Nike sneakers.

Why is it important? Grok-2 represents a significant leap from the previous Grok 1.5, offering more freedom and creativity to its users. Musk has emphasized that Grok was designed with fewer guardrails, encouraging a more rebellious and witty interaction compared to ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini.

In fact, Musk recently shared an image generated by Grok-2 of George Washington, subtly contrasting it with Gemini’s controversial output.

What’s the backstory? Musk created xAI last year after becoming disillusioned with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which he criticized for being biased and overly “woke.” Despite his role in co-founding OpenAI, tensions grew, leading to a legal battle. Now, Grok stands as a symbol of Musk’s vision for a more open and daring AI assistant, ready for both serious discussions and playful banter.
